Abstract
LNG exports are the “bright spot” keeping natural gas prices from falling below $2.00 per million Btu in basins having takeaway capacity. The U.S. is now the world’s LNG export leader with a robust 4th quarter finish even with the EU having 95% gas storage fill prior to 2023 winter’s start.
Globalization is all but over. Western Europe has opted for U.S. LNG and other stable sources for natural gas. A vast LNG infrastructure is under construction in Europe to replace Russian pipeline natural gas. U.S. LNG does have temporary over-capacity deliverability and faces an anti-fossil fuel Biden administration. We’re in an election year with most of the U.S. economy likely taking a “wait and see” view before spending capital. Any interest rate reduction by the Federal Reserve to stimulate the economy with lower capital / borrowing costs may increase electric power demand. Seasonal heating and cooling demand still remain as key natural gas price drivers. The future is in natural gas as a clean green fuel. However, a change in energy policy is needed to keep affordable energy.
