September 2020 - Ernie LaFlure

ETGS Membership,

As ETGS finishes our summer recess and we begin our fall session, we find the COVID 19 pandemic is still with us and is affecting all our activities.  Your ETGS Board is striving to provide educational and social activities for this fall, while keeping the safety of our members as our top priority.  To this end, please update your calendars and plan to participate in our activities detailed as follows:

  • ETGS has worked with the “Switch Energy Alliance”, under the direction of Dr. Scott Tinker (Director, Bureau of Economic Geology), to offer a streaming viewing of their new documentary “Switch On”.  This film follows in the footsteps of the award-winning documentary “Switch” and offers new insights on our most pressing energy policy decisions.  We highly recommend this balanced treatment of these issues that are so important to most of our members. Go to our exclusive streaming page at https://switchon.org/films/screening/I4ZUU9ZqNY to watch the film. You may also share this link with friends and family.  Please make note of your key questions, as these will be the focus of our live “Zoom” meeting with Scott Tinker, which I will detail next.

  • In place of a normal meeting in September, we will be hosting a virtual “Zoom” meeting with Dr. Scott Tinker at 12 noon September 23rd. I will communicate zoom dial in instructions to our membership via a separate email closer to the event.  Scott will be available to try and answer all your questions regarding the new film “Switch On”.  He also may share new material that he is preparing for the forthcoming AAPG ACE 2020 convention on September 29-October 1.

  • GeoGulf 2020 in Lafayette will also be happening Sept. 30-Oct. 2, and there is special pricing for both physical and virtual attendance.  Please visit www.geogulf.org for more information.

  • Last but by no means least; ETGS is pleased to be still hosting our popular outdoor event, the annual Golf Tournament on October 5.  This year ETGS is offering “BREAKEVEN” pricing for our Golf Tournament of $100/person to help in these difficult times.  Please see our website for registration and all the details.  Thanks again to Nick Pollard for organizing and hosting this event!

We wish everyone in the Society our very best as we all deal with these unprecedented times.  Stay safe!
